How to write your own wedding vows?
Not sure where to begin? Here are my tips to get you started:
- Start with reflection: Think about your journey together. What moments stand out? What qualities do you love most about your partner? You can use the questionnaire to help guide this.
- Be yourself: Your vows should sound like you. Use your natural voice, whether it’s humorous, sentimental, or a mix of both.
- Keep it personal: Share specific stories or memories that highlight your relationship. This makes your vows unique and meaningful.
- Express your promises: Clearly state what you promise to do for your partner. These can be serious commitments or light-hearted pledges.
- Stay concise: Aim for about 1-2 minutes. This keeps your vows impactful and ensures you don’t get too nervous.
- Practice: Read your vows out loud a few times. This helps you get comfortable with the words and the flow.
- Embrace emotions: It’s okay to laugh or cry. Your emotions show the depth of your feelings.
- End with a bang: Finish with a strong, heartfelt statement. This leaves a lasting impression.
- Use the vow template below: This will help you and your partner to write your vows in a similar format, but still allow you to keep them truly personal and meaningful.

Part 1
Opening Statement
Begin with something that sums up who this person is and what they mean to you.
“You are my best friend, and I’m so stoked you’ll soon by my wife/husband/partner too.”
“You are my favourite person and I can’t wait to marry you.”
“I love you. Thanks for saying you’ll spend your life with me.”
Part 2
Some Kind Words
Give your partner some affirmations of what you think is wonderful about them. Hype them up! Make them feel awesome! Complement, encourage, be their number 1 fan.
“You are kind, beautiful, and generous with the people around you.”
“You make me laugh until I cry but I can also trust you with my deepest fears.”
“You are creative, open-minded, great at parallel parking, and excellent at doing the dishes.”
Part 3
A Few Promises
Make some promises to them about the kind of partnership and life you want to have.
“I promise in front of our friends and family to accept you for who you are, to laugh with you and only occasionally at you, and to help you be the best you can be.”
“I promise to be patient and loyal, and the best partner to you. I promise to tell you every day how much you mean to me, even when it doesnโt come easily. I commit to this relationship through good times and bad.”
“I promise to take out the rubbish if you promise to put petrol in the car when it’s empty. I promise to support your dreams and be your biggest cheerleader. I promise to be a great parent with you if we are lucky enough to create a family in the future.”

Part 4
Future Thoughts
Finish with a view to your future together.
“I look forward to being an awesome team for years to come, and one day being old and grumpy but still very much in love with you.”
“We’ve shared so much of our lives together already; I can’t wait to see what is ahead. Know that I love you, now and forever.”
“Thank you for going on that first date with me. Let’s keep adventuring together. I love you to the moon and back.”
Other thoughts
You might like to decide on the same first and last line that both of you say, and then you can fill in the rest of the sections individually. Perhaps everything is a surprise and you write your vows separately and send them to me.
Still feeling stuck? Start with what you wrote in your questionnaire and then pull out what best fits.
Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to write your vows. They should reflect your love and commitment in a way that’s true to you. Good luck, and enjoy the process! ๐
